When God Gives You A Promise…

February 20, 2009 — 25 Comments

christian_warriorWhen God gives you a Promise…. You fight for it! When I read about Joshua leading the Israelites over the Jordan into the Promised Land, there is encounter after encounter when they had to fight to possess their promise. God had promised them the land, He told Joshua that every place the sole of his foot tread upon, was his. But yet, they still had to fight for it and fight for it they did. So many of us want our promises delivered to us on a silver platter, but we must remember the devil does not want us to walk in the promises of God. In fact, he will try to get you to give up on those promises. That is why we must fight for the promises God has given us.

Have you ever been given a promise that you gave up on because it never seemed to come to pass? That can seem very discouraging, but that is why God told Joshua to be strong and of good courage, not wimpy and discouraged. If God tells you, you will have victory, you stand on that promise! If God tells you everything you touch will be abundant and yet everything you touch seems to fall apart, you stand and fight for the promise! If God tells you a loved one will be healed, you fight and don’t let the “father of lies” have his way! Who’s report shall you believe? God’s Word or the doctor’s word?

If Joshua had looked at the giants in the land, if he had looked and based his decisions on the circumstances around him, he and all who followed him would have never made it to their promise. I suppose people don’t stand and fight because of many reasons…

Maybe they are afraid of conflict, or are too lazy, maybe they don’t want to look weird…  Fighting can be a bloody mess and many of us don’t like the thought of that. If you think Christianity is just a feel good, warm and fluffy thing, take a look at Calvary… It was a bloody mess! If Jesus endured that for us, at least we can do is stand and let our faith stand in the power of God and not the wisdom of man. (1 Cor. 2:5 ) Because you know what? The wisdom of man can leave you pretty jacked up.

So when the onslaught of hell comes against you to take you out, fight back! Stand on the promise of God! When the enemy creeps in to tell you how unworthy you are, fight back! And stand upon the promise that you are blood bought! No matter what the situation looks like, seek the Lord and see what He things on the matter.

Seeking the Lord’s heart will save you from fighting battles you were never supposed to fight and it will keep you fighting for the honor of your Lord and Savior. For He is worthy!

Don’t ever, ever give up! Go out and Possess The Land the Lord has given you for His honor, for His glory!

“Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

God bless you as you continue to move forward in Him.

  5. Hello Paul, I must say that this article is awesome. I teach a class at the detention center and I have been teaching to be Released out of Bondage. Last week lesson was on Exodus 13 and how God delievered the Israelites out of bondage. This week I am teaching out of Numbers and how to enter the Promise Land. I am going to share you article with the girls that. I know I have been bless by it and I know they will be also. Thanks so much, Karen

  6. Thank you so much Karen! I will be praying for you and the girls you are teaching.
Keep me posted on how things go! :)

God bless you as you continue advancing the Kingdom!

  7. Paul, Wow thanks for the prayers. Today was awesome! As I was teaching the girls that there promise land is the destiny that God has for them if they will just surrender ( Jermiah 29:11). If all the Israelites would have beleived God instead of seeing the giants, would they have been better off? They also loved your article and was total bless from it. As I was leaving the detention center, a girl came up to me and ask me if I would be back next week? She had tears in her eyes, my heart was going out to her. The guard standing at the door said if you are leaving you need to leave now, or stay a while. So I just got finishing tell the girls, rather you turn to the left or turn the right you will hear a voice behind you saying this is the way, lol. So I said to the guard I am staying! So the sound of the lock door was in place. The girl ( Nicole) came to know Christ as her savior. About 15 minutes later after I tooK up prayer request and one came to know the Lord and seeds was sown. The guard came back, due to other reason out of her control, I look at her and said we are ready to leave now, lol. So the girls saw the GOD IS THE ONE IN CONTROL, NOT MAN, NOT THE GIANT, BUT GOD. Thanks so much Paul! One day I will see you in heaven and give you a high five, Karen

  8. That is awesome Karen! Praise God! :)

It’s always worth it when someone comes to know Christ huh? Thank you for allowing the Lord to move through you..

God bless you and I’ll be expecting that high five! :)

He has cheated on me for a numbr years and i’ve forgiviven him, now he’s begining to call me names ugly names that hurt and it’s affecting our time together to the point i don’t desire to be with him in that way anymore. He speaks crule andnasty things about my body and how he’s not attracted to me anymore yet he wants me to with him in that way and i can’t . that’s how i feel lost and alone. 11. How do we know that a promise is from God?

How have you received your promises, Paul?

    Rui

  12. Hi Rui!
Thanks for stopping by and for the questions.
Well, we know there are MANY promises from God when we dig into the Bible. A promise from God can come from His Word (the Bible) or through a prophetic word given.

When everything lines up with the Word of God, we stand on that promise. What seems to happen a lot is, when God gives you a promise, everything around you will scream the opposite. This is a perfect opportunity for us to make a choice… Will be continue to believe or give in to what appears to be true.

I know for me, I can say God is true to His Word! I have had promises given to where I had to stand face to face with something that screamed the opposite of God’s Word. Other times there have been seasons where I had to continue to stand and keep my eyes on Jesus, knowing that His promise would come to pass in His perfect timing.

    I hope that helps Rui.

    God bless you!

  13. I totally agree with your article.I believe Christianity is warfare, Christ suffered to sin even to the point of the cross. Alot of people think that him hanging on the cross was the defining moment for him but I think his life was just as much if not more. He lived a life where he suffered to sin even to the point of the cross. He never gave into sin. That is the life we are called to, that is are promise. We to can over come just as Christ overcame. But for that to take place war must be declared on all that would come from my flesh/lusts. That is the battle I’m in. I have by no means done it as well as Christ but with my whole heart I run after him.

    God bless!

  14. Paul, can you, please, tel us abotu the promises which you feel were made to you, that we’re follow by “circusmtances screamign the opposite”, which came to pass?
That would be appreciated, at least by me.

  15. Rui,
I hope you already got your answer from Paul offline.
In case he’s been too busy to get back to you, I think I can answer your question.
When a promise is from God, no matter how difficult the situation is, and how many times adversities come towards you, your heart still tells you that you don’t want to give up. Even at times you are emotional weary and exhausted and “feel like” giving up, you just still can’t. And whenever you feel like giving up, you just don’t feel the peace and something keeps bugging you inside your heart to thell you that you should still keep trying one more time !! Thats because the Holy Spirit doesn’t want you to give up. The Holy spirit lives in you and guides your heart, and tells you what’s right or wrong to do. You may wanna think back the times when you actually gave up on certain thing/people/dream. You felt “completely ok” that you chose to give up or perhaps you grieved for a while and then felt perfectly fine before long. Thats becuz the Holy Spirit helped you to “give up” with joy so that you could move forward to the true blessing God has in store ahead for you. But if a promise is from God, the Holy Spirit will never “help” you to give up and even you feel like giving up He will still renew your heart and give you the strength to go on !!
    I hope it helps.

  16. Well said Lilly! Thank you for your comment! I am sorry Rui, for some reason I did not get the notification that you left that comment.

Lilly is right on! It really does come down to allowing the Holy Spirit to do what he does best.

The Lord is so very good and when He gives you a promise you must hold fast and not allow the enemy to steal it.

There are many examples to give, from God saying He will provide a lot of money to you for great things and the next thing you know, you go broke. Or maybe the Lord gives you a promise about your kids and all of the sudden they are acting out in a totally opposite way.

It comes down to hearing the Lord and believing it will happen… God said, I believe and that settles it! :)

  17. Thanks Lilly & Paul! Those are, indeed, helpful comments and I;m “not just saying that”, however, my question asked Paul to give us examples, from his life, to support the comments. Examples are reassuring, in my opinion!

  18. What a great article! An Encouragement, especially what Lily said.

I recently claimed a promise (a specific one at that) from God to me, but it took me almost a year to claim it. I had the thoughts of YA, right God you’ll do that? Nah, its too good to be true?!? NO WAY!! I was scared to be disappointed and hurt.

But He has given me so many signs, verses, etc…that it was ‘stupid’ for me not to claim His promise.

And like what Lily said, I have asked God to help me let go….but for some reason, I can’t. Even if I prayed, cried, knelt asking and begging for God to help me move on and let go. Never happened!

I have claimed His promise to me. I should be excited about it, but unfortunately I am a skeptic — I guess I just can’t see how He will fulfill that promise.

I wish I can explain more on how He showed me His promise and how He is guiding me. But only I can understand…as they say God is truly a PERSONAL GOD.

Thank you for your article. Helped me a lot!!

  19. Obedience is the key.

Christ was obedient unto death on a cross…therefore He was exalted to the highest place.

Be humble and obedient and you will eat from the land.

  20. Yes!! You are awesome!!!! God has given me a promise and I feel I am to lose hope becasue of the way a person is treating. God keeps gviing the constant scripture Everything is working together for your good!! Thank you Man of God for the Encouragement!! God Bless you!!

  21. Lily and Paul! You are right on the money!!! That is definitely the personality of the Holy Spirit. What a Blessing! Thank you!

  22. Thank you all for your kind words! The Lord is good and He is faithful!! :)
